21 Mar 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV to be built in Alabama
Mercedes-Benz yesterday began production of the first electric 2023 EQS SUV at its plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
It will use a battery from a plant the automaker opened nearby in Bibb County this April, TechCrunch reported on August 25, 2022.
The unstable situation in the world is spurring car companies to transfer production to the United States. The Inflation Reduction Act, passed by the US Congress in August, is designed to boost economic growth. Manufacturers of electric vehicles assembled using US components will receive $40 billion in tax credits. According to AlixPartners, auto companies and parts suppliers are committed to investing $38 billion through 2026 to boost battery production in the US.
The five-seater EQS SUV is based on the Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV. An optional third row increases the model’s seating capacity to seven and puts it in the category of the largest all-electric full-size SUV. The electric car is equipped with MBUX Hyperscreen, a triple screen system with scratch-resistant glass. It looks like a single 56-inch display.
The SUV will be presented in two versions. The power of the base model EQS 450+ is 335 horsepower. Under the hood of the high-performance version of the EQS 580 4MATIC – 536 horses. One battery charge is enough for 600 kilometers.
