21 Mar New investment from Cascades Sonoco in Alabama plant
Cascades Sonoco, a joint venture between Sonoco Products Company and Cascades Inc., announced an investment of approximately $16 million in its Birmingham, Alabama, facility.
By investing in world-class water-based coating technology, the company will be able to produce coated paper and board materials using the new FlexShield, FluteSHIELD and SurfSHIELD technologies. Recently introduced to the folding carton and corrugated board industry, these coatings are designed to replace standard low-density polyethylene (LDPE) coatings and the wax used in corrugated board manufacturing. Products with these coatings are recyclable, compostable and recyclable.
“This investment represents a significant geographic expansion of the market for Cascades Sonoco’s water-based products, especially in the fast growing Southeastern United States,” said Roger Fuller, senior vice president, Paper & Engineered Carriers U.S. & Canada, and Sonoco’s Display & Packaging. “Through the expansion of the product range, Cascades Sonoco confirms its commitment to maintaining its leading position in the paper roll security packaging industry.”
